Also because of their posture. The growth period in large breed dogs is longer than in other breeds. It lasts 15 months and in some cases even longer. These dogs increase their birth weight many times over, in the largest breeds it can be up to 100 times

During first stage (lasting up to 8th or 9th month) the skeleton develops. Only after this stage they start to gain muscles. With these dogs any nutrition or training mistakes can have serious and irreversible consequences. Overfeeding or feeding a puppy an unbalanced diet can lead to skeletal dysfunction, including the development of dysplasia. The same can be caused by the intensive physical training and the choice of exercises unsuitable for a young body. Unfortunately, large breed dogs are at risk for skeletal problems throughout all their lives. Their body weight combined with high level of activity can cause severe joint strain, which the caregiver should keep in mind at all times.

It would seem that in dogs of such impressive height, their digestive system would be equally large. In fact, it accounts for just over 2% of a dog’s body weight. Just to compare, the digestive system in small breed dogs constitutes almost 7% of their body weight. The sensitive digestive tract of large breed dogs cannot cope with too large portions, so do not overfeed them. Furthermore, large dogs tend to eat greedily, swallowing large amounts of air in the process. Such bad habits are one of the causes of gastric dilatation and volvulus, whichare very dangerous for your dog and call for immediate veterinary intervention.
